Rescued by the US Coast Guard, rehabilitated in the Turtle Hospital, the large male loggerhead turtle was recently released off Pigeon Key. Judging by the size of the sea turtle, he is about 50 years old. His coast guard rescuers gave him the name Sheldon, but no one seems to know why.
Sheldon is one lucky turtle. He is getting back in the water just in time as the mating season for sea turtles is about to commence. It’s time for Sheldon to woo the ladies in the warm coastal waters.
Sheldon has been fitted with a satellite transmitter tag by research scientists from the Summerland Key-based Mote Marine Laboratory. And you can monitor his movement by clicking on this link. Go, Sheldon!
